Debt Ceiling Crisis

foxnews 7-14-11
This morning I joined host Allison Seymour and former Congressman Robert Walker (PA-16th) on Fox News 5 to discuss the debt ceiling crisis. The situation is serious and currently negotiations are in a stalemate. I feel very strongly about this issue — see the article, “Where’s the Compromise?” on my blog for commentary.

Political Headlines 8/1/2013

I joined former Congressman Robert Walker and Fox 5 Morning News host Allison Seymour this morning for a discussion of the week’s top political headlines.

There has been a lot of discussion on the NSA surveillance program. While I think that careful surveillance is vital to our national security, it is also incredibly important for it to have the proper oversight.

In reality, some of the privacy rights we used to have are no longer feasible in light of the explosion of the internet and social media. We may not like it, but that’s the way life is now. The American people can accept that in terms of the government’s use of data as long as they know that their leaders are looking out for them by making sure national security protections have the oversight needed to make them effective without being overly intrusive.

Former Congressman Marty Russo and Fox News Anchor Tony Perkins discuss the latest political media headlines

I joined Fox 5 Morning News host Tony Perkins this morning for a discussion of the week’s top political headlines. We covered a wide range of topics, beginning with concerns about privacy after news of the NSA’s large scale phone record monitoring program became public. I think the President did the right thing in regards to gathering information without those being investigated knowing they were targeted. However, my key concern is learning more about why the secret courts appear to be rubber-stamping the requests every ninety days.

We ended with a discussion about the IRS investigations into 501(c)(4) organizations. I served on the House Ways and Means Committee fourteen out of my eighteen years and we were always looking into ways to make sure that 501(c)(3)s and 501(c)(4)s were really charitable organizations. The recent influx of 501(c)(4)s that are actually operating as political organizations is a problem. It’s disconcerting that what’s happening is that taxpayers are subsidizing the very wealthy, who are able to write off their 501(c)(4) donations as deductions. We need to go back to enforcing the law properly and require the organizations’ charitable function to be “exclusive”, as the law states.

This morning, I joined former Congressman Robert Walker and Fox 5 Morning News host Tony Perkins in an analysis of why the President’s gun control proposals failed to pass in the Senate.

I believe it was a shameful day. The President was upset and we all ought to be upset. Ninety percent of Americans are for background checks, including eighty-eight percent of Republicans. We can’t get it done because there is too much money in politics.

I sat down this morning with former Congressman Robert Walker and Fox 5 Morning News host Tony Perkins and covered the week’s top political headlines.

We talked about the President’s trip to the Middle East and I think that the Obama administration has been doing a great job in terms of their relationship with Israel. Some people attach too much significance as to “why” a visit like this happens. I think that the President thought it was a good time to go and he handled the trip well.
